MSc course Ecosystèmes Insulaires Océaniens (EIO - Ecosystems of the Islands of Oceania)

This MSc course, run jointly by the Université de Polynésie Française (UPF) and the prestigious Université Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris VI), will be organised in Paris (1st year) and UPF (2nd year). Admissions are based on candidates' academic record.

The EIO MSc is one of the specialist courses of the MSc Sciences de l’Univers Environnement Écologie (SDUEE - Sciences of the Universe Environment Ecology) of UPMC (Université Pierre et Marie-Curie), a UPMC-UPF joint MSc (jointly approved with UPF). The organisation of this specialist course is as follows:

  • 1st year (M1): entirely undertaken within the SDUEE course in Paris. Students from Polynesia graduating from scientific courses (BSc in Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry, Biology) wishing to take this MSc will, if admitted, take the 1st year course (M1) in Paris in the EIO specialist course, which for 2014-2015 was merged with the EBE course (Ecology, Biodiversity, Evolution) of the SDUEE MSc.
  • 2nd year  (M2): taken in Polynesia for students wishing to continue with the EIO 2nd year course.
  •  The 2nd year EIO course (M2) will take place in French Polynesia with theoretical and practical courses in the 1st semester taught by a team of university lecturers and researchers   from partner organisations (UPF, IRD, Ifremer ILM, CRIOBE). The 2nd year internship will be carried out in Pacific research organisations (in Polynesia or in another country in an island environment) or within companies that may or not be members of the pôle d’innovation Tahiti Fa’ahotu Innovation Cluster. Students may choose a topic for their internship from the list offered or may themselves propose a subject of their choice, which must be validated by the course lecturers.
AIMS OF THE COURSE

Aims in terms of the acquisition of scientific knowledge

The EIO course of the SDUEE MSc, through its multidisciplinary approach, covers a very wide spectrum  of scientific knowledge in the fields of the geosciences, environment, biology (terrestrial and marine biodiversity) and ecology, but with a focus of application on the Pacific region and in particular Polynesia. It will thus train a new generation of scientists equipped with a multidisciplinary culture, aware of the scientific issues of the Pacific zone and capable of applying their competencies in research programmes developed in the Pacific and in the French overseas territories. The course covers a wide spectrum of themes offering access to a wide range of professional opportunities in the fields of education (Capes teaching qualification), research or industry.

Aims in terms of the acquisition of professional competencies

The aim of the EIO course is to train researchers capable of analysing and modelling complex situations in the various fields covered (with six priority themes: marine ecosystems, terrestrial biodiversity, climate change, natural hazards, impact on the environment of past and present anthropic activities, uses, valorisation and management of ecosystems and of biodiversity). These researchers will be capable of putting into application the most suitable tools to deal with complex problems requiring a wide range of multidisciplinary knowledge.

Aims in terms of employment opportunities (professional career or continuation of studies)

The employment opportunities resulting from the EIO MSc are mainly: technical and scientific management positions in various organisations and institutions, positions as engineers in industry, design offices, public sector organisations and territorial authorities, research and higher education.  

Attachment to research organisations (laboratories, doctoral school). The EIO MSc is attached to the Ecole Doctorale du Pacifique (ED n°469). All the research organisations in French Polynesia (UPF, IRD, Ifremer, ILM and CRIOBE-EPHE) will play an active part in the training offered in the EIO course, either in teaching or in supervising internships.
 International dimension (international partnerships). Partnerships (student internship conventions, for example) with research organisations and universities of the Pacific rim countries will be established in order to integrate the EIO course within the Pacific zone.

TARGET POPULATION

1st year MSc course (M1): students from science courses (BSc in Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry, Biology) and wishing to apply for this MSc will, if admitted, take the 1st year EIO course (M1) in Paris (integrated with the EBE course) of the SDUEE MSc.
2nd year MSc course (M2) : students having successfully passed the M1 course within the SDUEE MSc at UPMC or another MSc course may apply for the 2nd year MSc EIO course.
